Many people use the term, “safari,” but few people really know its origins. The word “safari” is derived from the Swahili language, which is primarily spoken in the African country of Ethiopia. Safari translates into “long journey.” Noted English adventurer, Sir Richard Frances Burton was the first person to use the term safari in English discourse.
Prior to the mid-to-late-nineteen hundreds, a “safari” usually entailed a hunting trip intended to shoot large animals on the African continent. During the colonial period in Africa, many European citizens traveled to Africa to hunt the legendary game of the land. These frequent hunts by so many people greatly reduced populations of African lions, leopards, giraffes, elephants, and other animals.
Many species became endangered or extinct altogether. However, safaris took a much better turn in later decades. During the second half of the twentieth century and in present times, tourists from many countries around the world voyage to Africa, and instead of shooting the animals there, they take harmless photographs of them. Vans are often used to shuttle tourists around the vast deserts of Africa like the Sahara and Serengeti. Safaris and tourism in general are tremendously crucial industries in Africa’s economy.
