In the United States as well as all over the world, tremendous events and transformations were taking place during the 1960s. There were great changes and upheavals on the social, cultural, and political levels, which greatly influenced and changed the world. One facet of this decade that greatly defines it is the musical revolution that took place.

Both American musicians and British music personalities changed the musical landscape for decades to come. One American musical legend during this time is Elvis Presley, who was born in Tennessee in 1935. His hits like “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” earned him the title of “the King of Rock and Roll.” He is often simply referred to as “the King.” American artists were not the only ones to influence the musical scene of the 1960s; the “British Explosion” or “British Invasion” ushered in by famous bands like The Beatles and The Animals also shook the decade. In New York State during August of 1969, the Woodstock music and art festival took place. Woodstock was very representative of hippie ideals and practices that became enshrined in sixties culture like free love, communal living, and peace.

Tie-dye and patchwork clothing was prominent not only at Woodstock, but with hippies all over the world. Aside from music, many other important events occurred during the 1960s. The Vietnam War was escalated in 1968 under the authority of U.S. President Lyndon Johnson. Landmark legislation for racial social and political equality was ratified during this time as well. The 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act gave African Americans increased rights and equality. On July 20, 1969, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration successfully put the first man on the moon with the Apollo 11 mission.
