American Indians are the first human inhabitants of North, Central, and South America. They are descended from Neolithic peoples who originated in Asia and followed migrating herds across the Ice Age land bridge now covered by the Bering Strait between modern-day Siberia and Alaska. The earliest point in history when they could have made this great move would have been about 50,000 years ago, but this is still under academic speculation.

The most recent time in history when the land bridge was still exposed was about 12,000 years ago. “Indians” were incorrectly named as such by Christopher Columbus, who very mistakenly thought himself and his crew to have arrived in the East Indies and the peoples they found living there to be East Indians! Later in history, this misnomer was still in popular use when the Caribbean Islands were known as
the “West Indies”.

Many Native American Indians are prominently featured in U.S. history. One of the first Native American Indian physicians in the U.S. was Charles Alexander Eastman (1858-1939), of Santee and English-American heritage. Active in political and Native rights issues, he also co-founded the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865-1915) was American female physician in the U.S., and also the first recipient of federal student financial aid.

Jim Thorpe (1888-1953), a multi-talented early 20th century athlete, was a football and baseball star. Future President Dwight Eisenhower sustained a knee injury while tackling Thorpe in a 1912 football game! Billy Mills was the only America ever to win the Gold medal in the Olympic 10K meter run. He made this distinguished accomplishment at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
