British author, Sir James Matthew Barrie conceived of the character, Tinkerbell, in his play and novel, Peter and Wendy. In Barrie’s play and novel, Tinkerbell was a fairy that repaired broken cooking supplies. Tinkerbell could only feel one emotion at a time without conflicting feelings because her small size would not permit extra emotion; therefore she was either very elated, or quite subdued at a given time. She spoke no human words—only a secret fairy tongue which sounded like a bell tolling. Tinkerbell became well-known immediately after the release of Walt Disney’s film Peter Pan, which was made in 1953.

This was an animated film, so Tinkerbell was depicted as a small blond-haired, green-eyed fairy that sprinkled fairy dust so that she and anyone else she sprinkled with dust would be able to fly. She later became representative of the entire Disney company, as she often graces the Disney logo with fairy dust at the start of many Disney films and television shows.
